Learn to train your own dog in three months
Three months of short daily sessions — about 45 hours including a six-week group class — gets an ordinary owner and an ordinary dog to reliable sit, down, stay, recall and loose-leash walking. You will not have a competition dog. You'll have one that comes when called in the park.
3 months · ~45 hours · reliable recall and loose-leash walking with mild distractions
1.Don't Shoot the Dog — Karen Pryor
Pryor trained dolphins before she trained dogs, and this book is the reason clicker training exists. It teaches the mechanics underneath every good trainer: timing a marker, rewarding at a high rate, shaping a behavior in small steps, and why punishment produces a dog that's careful rather than one that's good. It's short, it's not really about dogs, and it will make every video you watch afterwards make sense. Buy a clicker or pick a marker word ("yes") before you finish it.

Don't Shoot the Dog →2.Kikopup — Emily Larlham on YouTube
Hundreds of short, precise videos from a trainer who uses no force at all and films the whole process, mistakes included. Work through her basics in order: marker training, sit, down, "leave it," settle on a mat, loose-leash walking, recall. Five-minute sessions three times a day beat one long session; dogs learn in reps, not hours. Keep your reward rate high and your criteria low, and raise one thing at a time — distance, duration or distraction, never two at once.

Your dog is good in the kitchen; the class is where you find out whether it's good near ten other dogs. Look for a trainer certified by the CCPDT (CPDT-KA) who uses reward-based methods, and skip anyone selling prong collars or "balanced" training. A good instructor will also fix your timing, which you can't see yourself. Six weeks of a basic or intermediate manners class is the right dose.

If there's no decent class near you, or you want to go further, replace step 3 with a six-week online course at Fenzi Dog Sports Academy. Bronze enrollment (~$65) gets you all the lectures; Gold (~$260) adds instructor feedback on videos of your own dog. If your dog is biting, lunging or guarding food, skip this path entirely and book a veterinary behaviorist or a certified behavior consultant first.
Why this path
Most owners learn dog training from a viral video and a choke chain, and end up with a dog that behaves only when the leash is tight. Pryor gives you the principles, so you can solve problems no video covers. Kikopup gives you a step-by-step curriculum free of force. The class supplies the one thing you can't create at home: distraction. Skip the theory and you'll copy tricks without understanding; skip the class and your dog will only listen in the living room.
